Synopsis:

In the 1960s, the USSR and Yugoslavia signed an agreement to jointly develop an innovative rocket, the “Vostok 15,” involving both Yugoslav and Soviet scientists. The project included plans for constructing a new cosmodrome, “Eastern Gate, ” on the outskirts of Belgrade. However, the construction was interrupted by tragic events: the chief engineer and project leader passed away six days apart under different circumstances.

Following their deaths, the USSR hastily withdrew its specialists and technology, leading to the suspension of the project. In 1973, a decision was made to abandon and reorganize the initiative. The remaining structures of the cosmodrome were repurposed: the powerful launch rails became the foundation for a residential building consisting of three blocks. The former third stage of the rocket was converted into a chimney for a boiler room serving the building, and the launch shaft was used for laying utility lines, improving access to them. As a nod to its history, the complex retains the unofficial name “Eastern Gate.”
